Do you exercise? If so, at what time of the day do you prefer to exercise?
I prefer early mornings. It enables me to start the day fresh, rejuvenated, and almost sure I can tackle anything the day brings my way. Thank the endorphins produced by exercising. Some people prefer to exercise indoors while others prefer outdoors. I used to do indoors faithfully until one day I tried outdoors, especially for walks, jogs and runs. I have never looked back. It comes with the added benefit of fresh air and enjoying different surroundings. However, it also comes with increased risk, especially when it’s early morning and late evening. Visibility is reduced, and hazards are harder to spot. Here are suggestions about how to stay safe:
-
Wear Reflective and Bright Clothing
Choose gear with reflective strips or LED lights. These can be easily found in the clothing markets or tailor-made. Some sections of the roads have barely any pavement to run and you find yourself having to step on the road even for small sections. Make sure that they (drivers and riders) can see you. Bright colors like neon yellow, orange or green help drivers see you more easily.
2. Use a Headlamp
A headlamp keeps your hands free and lights up your path. This has especially proved important when hiking when it’s dark. However, if the area where you are walking or jogging is completely dark, consider this.
3. Stick to Well-Lit, Familiar Routes
Again, we are not encouraging recklessness where you exercise at 4 am in isolated roads or unfamiliar roads. Avoid dark alleys, isolated trails or unfamiliar roads and choose routes with streetlights and sidewalks when possible.
4. Stay Alert and Limit Distractions
Avoid using headphones or keep the volume low so you can hear traffic and other surroundings. Also, stay aware of your environment—look out for vehicles, cyclists and other pedestrians.
5. Run or Walk Against Traffic
Facing oncoming traffic allows you to see approaching vehicles and react if necessary.
6. Carry an Identification
You can wear a bracelet with your name and emergency contact information.
7. Let Someone Know Your Route
This is especially important if you exercise alone. Tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you expect to return.
As you exercise, stay safe. Cheering you on!
